Adoption Update: Mama

When I moved to Seattle in 2010, I adopted a cat from another shelter. I named her Jade and she was my roommate for many years. In July 2019, despite the best efforts of my vet’s office and the kind people at Blue Pearl, she passed away suddenly and with no immediately apparent cause. I was distraught.

In August 2019, I learned that Seattle Humane was having an adoption event, and decided that since I had room in my home, I could go and just see if I fell in love with anyone. Her name card said Mama and she was in one enclosure while the one above her housed several kittens who resembled her. When I went to interact with her, she rolled right over and let me pet her belly, and I knew I had to take her home. At first, she was reclusive. She would only stay in one room, even after several months. Medically, she was fine, but I was worried about her living in just one room. And then March 2020 happened, and we all know how that went. I started working remotely and would take my laptop to different parts of the apartment. Slowly, she followed me out to the living room and the bedroom and started roaming anywhere there was an open door! She now has full run of the apartment, but she usually prefers to stay close to me and snuggle. Her favorite place to sleep is on my legs, which is a bit inconvenient for me sometimes, but that’s okay. She likes watching TV and likes having her belly rubbed. She doesn’t like being picked up or having her nails clipped. She is very melodramatic about the latter. I had to give her a special elevated cat bed next to my human bed, because I kept accidentally disturbing her in my sleep when she would sleep on mine. Her hobby is sleeping in her dome and running from one end of the apartment to the other as fast as she can. And her name is still Mama. Nothing else ever seemed to fit her, so now she’s my sweet little Mama Kitty, and I love her so much.
